“The Second Order”;

The next day, Bird bounced into the Mob. It was 5.45 p.m. and she’d just been to her Dusk Coders Club, where she was making a “Teacher Tracker” app. (She’d got the idea from Harry Potter.)

“You don’t need the Marauders Map,” she said. “You just need networked tablets, good wifi and some brutal C++.”

Mister Rob was “sleeping” under a blanket behind Russell. At least that’s what it looked like, but he had wired himself up to Russell, and goodness knows what information he was downloading.

Me and Stevie were wondering about printing something else on Russell. All the business with Mister Rob had made us forget that we could print anything we wanted. I was considering a robot-rabbit or six, or a gold football that automatically went into the goal. Stevie was in pretty bad shape because, as punishment for “clearing up” his room, he had lost his pocket money for A YEAR, had to do the washing up for A MONTH and, worst of all, had been banned from MAZZO for the last twenty-four hours. . Stevie was as twitchy as anything. He found not playing MAZZO almost unbearable. If it hadn’t been for Mum seeing Mister Rob, I think she would have punished him more severely, but she was flummoxed.

Piggy had slunk in behind Bird, looking woebegone.

“Piggy chewed off the corner of the front door,” said Bird.

“You bad dog,” said Stevie, ruffling his fur lovingly.

“And he did a wee in the kitchen and Mum stepped in it in her new socks.”

“Bad, bad dog.” Stevie kissed Piggy’s forehead.

“And Mum caught him in her bed and found two fleas on her pillow.”

“She can’t blame him for the fleas,” interrupted Stevie. “She should look after him better.” Piggy licked Stevie’s face in gratitude.

“…because he chewed his new flea collar off and left it in the actual toilet,” said Bird. “And Mum just caught him eating one of Ella’s dirty nappies.”

“Euggghhh,” said Stevie, backing away and wiping his face with his sleeve.

“Mum chased him out of the house. Didn’t you hear the yelling?”

Neither of us had heard anything out of the ordinary.

“Why can’t you be a good dog?” I frowned. Piggy limply wagged his straggly tail.

“I know!” said Stevie. “Let’s get Mister Rob to train him and make him good.”

“He’s a robot, not a genie,” said Bird.

“Did you just give me an order?” asked Mister Rob from under his blanket.

“YES,” said Stevie.

Mister Rob rose from his bed. We hadn’t changed his clothes since we made him, so he looked crumpled and stale. Also Piggy had been playing with the hem of his trousers for fun and they’d torn a bit, revealing a smooth un-blotchy leg. Mister Rob had a smudge on his left cheek and one of his ears appeared to be a tiny bit too low.

“OK,” said Stevie. “I want Piggy to not poo or wee in the house or chew up things he shouldn’t.”

“How is Mister going to work that?” I asked. “He’s not a dog expert.”

“I’m currently downloading and assimilating all the latest dog-training data,” said Mister.
